Winning back mother's magical milk.

چکیده
One of the most underrated social dangers of the AIDS pandemic in developing countries is that the risk currently inherent in breastfeeding may cause it to go ‘out of fashion’, even among HIV-negative mothers. Professor Jerry Coovadia From questionnaires sent out, her province had identified 1 300 health care workers who potentially need dispensing licences but this number was being ‘carefully scrutinised’, she added.

Intake of own mother's milk during the first days of life is associated with decreased morbidity and mortality in very low birth weight infants during the first 60 days of life.
BACKGROUND The incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and possibly also of sepsis is lower in preterm infants fed their own mother's milk (hereafter 'mother's milk') compared with formula-fed infants. It is unclear whether this is caused by the protective properties of breast milk or by the absence of cow's milk. Especially in early life, mother's milk is often unavailable to preterm infa...
متن کاملThe calming effect of a maternal breast milk odor on the human newborn infant.
We examined the effects of the odors from mother's milk, other mother's milk and formula milk on pain responses in newborns undergoing routine heelsticks. Forty-eight healthy infants were assigned to four groups, an own mother's breast milk odor group (Own MM), another mother's breast milk odor group (Other MM), a formula milk odor group (Formula M) and a control group. To assess infant distres...
متن کاملRelationships among Different Water-Soluble Choline Compounds Differ between Human Preterm and Donor Milk
Choline is essential for infant development. Human milk choline is predominately present in three water-soluble choline (WSC) forms: free choline (FC), phosphocholine (PhosC), and glycerophosphocholine (GPC). It is unclear whether mother's own preterm milk and pooled donor milk differ in WSC composition and whether WSC compounds are interrelated. Mother's own preterm milk (n = 75) and donor mil...
متن کاملDoMINO: Donor milk for improved neurodevelopmental outcomes
BACKGROUND Provision of mother's own milk is the optimal way to feed infants, including very low birth weight infants (VLBW, <1500 g). Importantly for VLBW infants, who are at elevated risk of neurologic sequelae, mother's own milk has been shown to enhance neurocognitive development. Unfortunately, the majority of mothers of VLBW infants are unable to provide an adequate supply of milk and thu...
متن کاملMultiple food allergy: a possible diagnosis in breastfed infants.
Six infants suspected of food allergy during breastfeeding were evaluated using prick tests, total IgE, RASTs and intestinal permeability measurements during fast and provocation with mother's milk. An elimination diet was undertaken in mothers, removing first cow's milk protein (CMP), then, when inefficient, all foods suspected on the clinical history or a positive prick test in the child, fol...
